Effect of Low Temperature Treatments on Growth and Flowering of Calanthe striata R . Br . Native to Korea

Abstract
Calanthe striata R. Br. native to southern islands in Korea has beautiful yellow Mowers with sweet fragrance, and it has been reported to have very good ornamental value. The effect of low temperature treatments on growth and flowering of C. striate was examined to develop the forcing method. Low temperature treatments were conducted at both 5¡É and natural low temperature of 730 m altitude area of Mt. Hal1a in Cheju island, Korea for 30, 60, 90, 120, or 150 days. In general, days to bloom and to spreading of leaf after termination of cold treatment decreased with increasing days of low temperature treatment. However, the number of days to bloom from the beginning of cold treatment was the shortest (130 days) in the treatment of 60 days at 5 ¡É. It was 54 days shorter than that of untreated control. This treatment produced long flower stalk with excellent blooming status and showed rapid and good leaf growth. In case of natural low temperature treatment for 90 days from October 5 in the mountain area, the plants were forced to flower by 2 months as compared with the untreated control, had long flower stalk with excellent blooming status and showed rapid leaf growth and leaf good spreading shape.
